Sailing from and around Menorca including Mahon & Ciutadella

Menorca or Minorca is the second largest of the Balearic Islands. Its location is just northeast of Mallorca and it is one of the most relaxed islands in the Balearics with a chill-out feel. Its preserved natural beauty is perfect for those looking to find fresh unspoilt locations to travel in. Today it is a European Biological Reserve and a Unesco Biosphere Reserve with more than 75% of its area protected.

Exploring Menorca by sea on a sailboat or motorboat is ideal. The coast has lots of calas or coves which were formed over thousands of years by the sea sculpting the coastline and leaving pearl white sandy beaches lined with pine trees and colourful translucent waters.

There are about 40 sheltered calas along the 120 kilometres of coastline which are great for sailing around the island and provide year round shelter including ideal anchorages for lunch or dinner. You will find the deepest natural harbour in the main town of Mahón which is more than 3 and a half nautical miles in length making it the world's largest natural deep water harbour surpassed only by Pearl Harbour!

The island enjoys a thriving history; from the bronze age settlements all the way through to British colonialism in recent centuries, the scenery and points of interest dotted around the island are marvelous. Combined with the neighbouring islands of Mallorca and Cabrera, this part of the mediterranean offers weather and conditions which are ideal for any type of sailing holiday. From sailing amateurs and professionals to novices renting boats with a skipper, Menorca offers something for all sailing experiences. If you want to island hop, the next island along is just twenty five nautical miles away where you will find Mallorca's North Eastern corner. It's broad bays of Alcudia and Pollenca are located in the north where there are a variety of anchorages including the port and nearby walled town of Alcúdia with history dating back centuries. Or, you could sail directly down Mallorcas east coast with it´s numerous ports, such as Portocolom, Cala d´Or, Portopetro and beautiful bays such as Cala Figuera and the nature reserve of Cala Mondragó.

In short sailing from Menorca gives you a lot of flexibility. The Port de Mahòn Marina is a good starting point in the South and Ciutadella is a good starting point in the north – especially if you want to pop across to Mallorca.

From Menorca's Mahon you can explore the harbour and the pleasant capital, which is build atop cliffs on the southern shore. Enjoy the local gin tonic which is still produced on site the old fashioned way or try it the Balearic way with a sweet bitter lemon mix they call Pomada. Even though it tastes like lemonade it's potent stuff so take it easy! A short sail north takes you to one of the numeros nature reserves where you can anchor anywhere between the mainland and the island of Colom.

La Vall offers 3 bays one after the other and beautiful anchorage spots. Since the beaches are hard to reach by land you are pretty much guaranteed you can have a swim without bumping in to crowds of tourists. Northwards at the end of a bay you will reach Fornells, which has built up its reputation as a spot for fresh seafood thanks to fishermen. The north eastern coast is great for diving as well thanks to many submerged relics and caverns.

Ciutadella, the other key ton on the island is also the old capital on the east coast. It is absolutely packed during San Joan in June just after the summer solstice when there is a medieval like festival with horses and plenty of drink. It is a spectacular event if you can make it to the venue. The town itself is full of character with quaint shops and cafes, and a very pretty harbour.

Coming round the other sid of the island, Menorca's southern coast offers more in terms of beach spots. Between small villages offering good food and calas with stunning anchorages, you will even find unusual spots including tombs built in to the cliff's caves in historic times.

A 7 days itinerary around the island will keep you busy exploring just Menorca and the two main Ports.
You can also opt for a 7 days itinerary sailing across over to Mallorca northern & eastern coasts from Ciutadella.
