Sailing from and around Port Adriano, Portals, Andratx, Soller, Santa Ponsa

One of the most exclusive areas on the island of Mallorca, just 12km west of Palma de Mallorca is the harbour at Portals. This elegant marina is composed of luxury residences, fine dining restaurants and upmarket boutiques frequented by some of the most affluent visitors to the island. The glamorous port is a draw card for some of the Mediterranean's most luxurious vessels, power boats and sailingyachts alike, so it is essential to book a visitor's berth well in advance. Even so, it is just as convenient to travel ashore by tender and anchor close to the marina or in the neighbouring bays of Cala Portals, Illetas or the long stretches of beach further west at Palmanova. The area attracts many charter yachts but there are plenty of sandy spots to choose from and lots of water sport activities to engage in. But if you'd rather lounge in the sun, cocktail in hand, there are several trendy beach bars to moor alongside and enjoy the vibrant coastal atmosphere.

Heading further southwest, from one exclusive community to the next, passing some of the more expensive locations such as Santa Ponsa and Camp de Mar, lies the picturesque harbour town of Port Andratx (also known as Andraitx). This well-sheltered bay is also an active fishing marina, so if you are looking to stop it's best to drop anchor in front of the harbour rather than in the dock. It is well worth taking the tender ride to walk the promenade and, if time permits, visit one of Europe’s best and largest contemporary art centres. If you are considering going over to the island of Ibiza, Port d'Andratx is a popular and convenient place to start your journey. But, if you are sticking to Mallorca and chartering further west of, keep your eyes peeled for marine life. There are plenty of opportunities for dolphin spotting as you sail towards the newly developed Port Adriano. Once a tiny fisherman's marina, the area has undergone expansive renovation, introducing moorings to accommodate some of the grander superyachts visiting the Balearic islands.

From Andratx to the north of the island the next port of refuge is that of Puerto Soller. An inviting harbour with the dramatic Tramuntana mountains as backdrop. It is actually the only secure port on Mallorca's west coast and if you're sailing during peak season be prepared for the many yachts seeking refuge. It is a lovely area to stop on anchor and a popular place for day visitors that catch the old train from Palma. Form the port you can take a bus, walk or enjoy the little tram ride that runs up to Soller town.

Sailing along the northwest coast offers breathtaking views of the Tramuntana mountain range and it´s villages build on ancient stone terraces. In coves below the villagers have build shelters into the rocks for their boats, these tiny ports of Canonge, Valdemossa, Dejá or Llucalcari make for perfectly picturesque day anchorages. Last not least the spectacular inlet of Sa Calobra to the north of Soller has to be mentioned.

For a 7 day sailing itinerary Mallorcas southwest offers plenty of convenient ports, bustling towns and well sheltered overnight anchorages plus a trip the northwest coast up to Soller. For another 7 day with more sailing you can cross over to Ibiza very convenient from Andratx, Santa Ponsa or Port Adriano
